A Guide to Canal Rocks

Updated: Mar 28, 2022

A whole year has passed, and your nerves are tingling with exhilaration. The time has finally arrived for you to pack up your bags and leave for your desired vacation destination. This time around, you have chosen to visit Canal Rocks. First, let us commend you on your excellent choice. Before you head off to this heaven on earth, allow us to tell you a few facts about it.

Canal Rocks also known as “Winjee Sam” in the Noongar lingo is a succession of granite rocks that are situated in the Indian Ocean just off a coast that is located about 4 kilometers south of Yallingup, a South West region of Western Australia.

These rocks are the result of the erosion of granite due to the constant bashing from the coastal waters. Thus, a narrow channel between the rocks was formed and was named Canal Rocks. If you really want to know, these rocks are medium to coarse-grained and contain minerals such as perthite, quartz, and hornblende.

What to experience

As you step foot on this resort, the first thing that you’ll observe is that the view is breathtaking. Dozens of jagged rocks spread across the vast Indian Ocean with the water continually battering them giving off a somehow surprisingly calming vibe to the whole place.

Furthermore, you can also experience incredible views from the car park even just by sitting in your car. But we’d recommend that you stretch your legs and have a look around.

Towards the north, Cape Naturaliste gives off some spectacular sights to behold. A wooden path is situated for you to experience the canal up close. This wooden path takes you on the premises of the rocks themselves, and you are free to climb over them if you wish. It also leads you to little pools of swirling water where you can find some enchanting marine creatures.

You can also snorkel and fish in the area. If you feel like walking, you can hike to the nearby Wyadup Cliffs which are at a two-kilometer distance from Canal Rocks. It’s a two-hour round-trip stroll that rewards the hiker with some stunning views of the Indian Ocean.

Best time to visit

As far as the seasons are concerned, it is recommended to visit this location from December to May, when their spring/summer season is still underway.

The best time to visit this spot is usually when the sun is up. The water might be calm if there is a little wind. If it’s windy, you might notice that the ocean is surging at the far end of the canal. The evening sunset adds to the beauty of Canal Rocks.
